Course Description

Properly designing characters means not thinking of each in isolation. Every character comes alive for a reader or viewer not simply by what we see that character say and do, but also by what the characters around her say and do. It is relational.

Your task as a writer is not only to bring people to life; it is to put them into an exciting story. This means that you need to be very strategic when choosing character traits. You want similarities and differences. You want to select attributes that create the potential for conflict. Failure to do so results in disconnects between the characters and a far less thoughtful story.

What People Are Saying

“I love Barbara Vance’s classes. this is the second one I have been completed and I wish I could have her here at home with me, supporting me through my first idea of a novel. She has a very unique way of explaining and it resonates with me very much. Her examples are so very helpful. And I am looking forward to completing all the class projects. Thank you, Barbara.”

“This class was tremendously helpful! I have just started on the second draft of my manuscript. Even though I have a good sense of who my characters are at this point, one of my goals, as I revise, is to really differentiate the protagonist’s friends and develop their relationships with him and each other. This class gave me great, actionable advice on how to do that! I will definitely be taking more courses by this instructor.”

“Excellent course! Though I would VERY much recommend taking the Character profile course first, it’s not entirely necessary but you’ll get so much more value out of this class if you’re at least familiar with the key concepts”
