Writing Child Characters
Write realistic child characters whose intellect and emotional development create depth to her personality and room for her to grow. Learn to see through a child’s eyes.
Child characters are uniquely challenging to write. As writers, we must get inside of the head of a child, honoring their hearts and experiences, not making them too worldly nor too juvenile. This means understanding how children develop, process challenges, and the unique ways they see the world.

What People Are Saying
“Great instructor, very thorough in examples and explanations. I didn’t know what to expect or have any idea of how to put myself in the perspective of a child. Great at making concepts understandable. Highly recommended!!”
“There was so much helpful detail on aspects I didn’t even realise were so important. I love the way you continued to emphasise the need for staying true to the child’s perspective – everything discussed was clear. And the bonus child psychology was great. Your examples for character analysis are in-depth as always, thank you for this lesson – I never considered making a child character but I most likely will now.”
“This is really amazing, so much insight into a child’s mind. Thank you very much”
“I enjoyed the class. The example of losing the blankie was tender. Barbara’s teaching helps in understanding the viewpoint of a child character.”
“Another gem of a class Ms. Vance :)”
